Mehri & Skalet is investigating credit card billing practices in light of the Credit Card Act of 2009, which establishes new and important restrictions on credit card companies.  Many of these new rules go into effect later this month.  Click here for more information.

This website keeps what it calls a "blacklist" of customers who have exercised their right to a refund, or "chargeback," on their credit cards.  Businesses can then use this information to deny service to blacklisted customers.  Badcustomer allows consumers to remove themselves from the list by paying a substantial fee.  According to the website, over 7 million people are on the blacklist.  Click here for more information.

Best Buy charges $39.99 for what it calls “optimization” services on new computers.  It assesses this charge in addition to its advertised retail prices.  It does not appear that the “optimization” adds any real value to the product, and in many instances consumers are unable to buy a non-optimized computer at the advertised price.  Click here for more information.
